4th of July turns into Horrific Accident in Curry County, OR
July 5, 2022

Curry County, Oregon (Brookings, OR) – On July 4, 2022, around 2:23 p.m., the Curry County Sheriff’s Office dispatch began getting many 911 calls from the Beach Front RV park along Lower Harbor Road in Harbor. The caller said that a car had run over multiple individuals and into RVs and that the suspect’s automobile was still on the scene. According to one caller, there were multiple injured people and CPR was being administered to one of them.

Sheriff’s Patrol Deputies, Brookings Police Department officers, the Harbor Fire Department, and Cal Ore Life Flight Ambulance all responded. First responders came in a matter of minutes and began treating the victims. Deputies approached a male individual who was driving a huge Econo Van that had crashed into the throng. Witnesses reported seeing the driver, who seemed to have fallen asleep behind the wheel. Paul Armenta, 66-year-old, of Brookings, Oregon, was identified as the van’s driver. Doris Dianne Bever, 79-year-old, of Discovery Bay, California, was identified as one of the victims trapped by Armenta. Rebecca Williams, 46-year-old, is from White City, Oregon. Hiedei Bailey is 38 years old and from White City, Oregon. Both Bailey’s and Williams’ automobiles were struck while parked next to one another, inflicting significant damage to both automobiles before hitting the two women. Bailey’s sister was also said to be conducting CPR on her, and Bailey’s eleven-year-old daughter was said to be playing on the beach at the time.

Armenta, Bever, and Bailey were all taken by EMS to the Brookings Emergency Room, where Bailey was declared dead. Armenta and Bever had recovered, and Bever was scheduled for medical discharge. Williams was taken by EMS to Sutter Coast Facility, and the most recent information we have was that she was being airlifted to a higher care hospital in an unfamiliar place. Armenta’s truck also wrecked many camping equipment and picnic tables, as well as two RVs. Two small kids were inside one of the RVs, which had been pushed about fifteen feet. The two kids were not hurt. The pastors, Mike Quesada and Anthony Darling, who assisted with the Sheriff’s Office, showed up and consoled the family and friends.

Curry County Deputies and an Oregon State Trooper responded to the site, and Wes’s towing responded and took three wrecked cars, including Armenta’s van. The Curry County District Attorney was informed, and Deputies remained at the ER with Armenta for further investigation. Armenta was subsequently taken to Curry General Hospital for treatment of probable head trauma.
