Authorities said they were notified shortly after 9:15 a.m. of a collision involving approximately 15 vehicles, including a semi-truck, on the southbound lanes of Highway 99 between North and Cedar avenues. Investigators believe dense fog played a significant role in the crash, noting that visibility in the area was reduced to less than 15 feet. CHP officials stated that traffic in the two left lanes had slowed, and vehicles approaching from behind were traveling too fast to stop safely, triggering a series of collisions.

Most reported injuries were described as minor to moderate, though one individual was pronounced dead at the scene. People suffering minor injuries were transported to a local hospital using a Fresno FAX bus.

Officials advised that the roadway would remain affected for several hours and urged drivers to seek alternate routes. CHP suggested using southbound Highway 41, which remains clear past Cedar Avenue, allowing motorists to reconnect with Highway 99.
