Stanislaus County, California (Modesto, CA) – On March 23, 2026, a driver suspected of DUI is in custody following a crash that killed one passenger in Stanislaus County, CA.
Authorities identified the driver as Michael Anthony Smith, 39-year-old, of Modesto. He is facing felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges in connection with the incident. Investigators say Smith was driving southbound on Santa Fe Avenue, just south of Claus Road, when he veered off the roadway, causing the vehicle to roll over multiple times.
Emergency crews responded shortly before 5 a.m. and found a heavily damaged Honda sedan. A female passenger seated in the rear left died at the scene. Two other passengers were transported to Memorial Medical Center with injuries described as minor to moderate. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased, and it remains unclear whether any of the occupants were wearing seat belts.
Smith was unhurt but showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.
