Malheur County, Oregon (OR) – On August 23, 2023, the Oregon State Police responded to a two-vehicle collision at around 12:20 p.m., on Hwy-20 close to Milepost 237 in Malheur County, OR.
According to early findings of the inquiry, Christina Cheryl Shane-Contarino, 75-year-old of Yreka, California, was driving an eastbound Mercedes SUV when it crossed the center line into the approaching lane of traffic. Hijinio A. Hernandez 34-year-old of Ontario tried to evade hitting the Mercedes while driving a westbound Peterbilt commercial vehicle but was unsuccessful. The car crashed head-on in the westbound lane, forcing the Mercedes into the roadside shoulder and Peterbilt into a neighbouring cornfield.
According to reports, Shane-Contarino, the driver of the Mercedes, was pronounced dead at the site. Peterbilt’s driver was unharmed. Within three hours of the investigation taking place on the scene, the roadway was affected. The accident’s cause is being looked into.
The Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, Vale Fire and Ambulance, and ODOT offered support to OSP.
