1 Person Died, 1 was Badly Injured in an Alleged DUI Incident on Northbound I-5 in Carlsbad
March 23, 2022

San Diego County, California (San Diego, CA) – On March 23, 2022, a person was detained over an alleged intoxication while driving on Wednesday following a deadly incident that closed northbound Interstate 5 close to Carlsbad.

The two-car incident that involved a gray Toyota Prius was reported on I-5 at La Costa Avenue at about 3 a.m., Isidrone Martinez, a 20-year-old Oceanside resident. Traveling in a grey Honda Civic on I-5 northbound, south of La Costa Avenue, by a Caltrans construction zone, with a hard shutdown in place, which closed the #3 and #4 northbound lanes. The Honda Civic was inhabited by four people: two 20-year-old male Oceanside locals, a 20-year-old female Oceanside local, and a 22-year-old female Valley Center resident.

The Honda Civic took a right turn into the Caltrans restriction. The Honda Civic then drifted back to the left, into the #2 lane, colliding with the right rear of a grey Toyota Prius. A 33-year-old San Diego resident drove the Prius, while a 33-year-old male San Diego resident sat in the left rear of the Toyota Prius. Following the collision with the Toyota Prius, the Honda Civic drifted to the right up an embankment, causing the Honda Civic to flip over an undetermined number of times. One of Honda’s 20-year-old male occupants was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled. When the CHP arrived at the scene, the 20-year-old male passenger who had been thrown was declared dead. Martinez, the operator, was transferred to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Other Honda Civic occupants were also sent to nearby hospitals with serious injuries. The 33-year-old driver and passenger in the Prius were both minorly injured as a result of the crash.

Caltrans stopped on the roadway, forcing motorists to find another route through northbound I-5 via La Costa Avenue. As per Caltrans, all northbound I-5 lanes near La Costa Ave. have been restored. Martinez, the operator, was detained and is facing various counts in connection with the event, including felony DUI causing death. An investigation into this occurrence is ongoing.

Baker County, Oregon (OR) - On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, an accident closed the roadway while road crews removed a truck that was carrying a wind turbine tower along I-84 in eastern Oregon, Baker County, OR.

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, the crash occurred between Baker City and Ontario, near milepost 332. The agency has blocked I-84 eastbound just outside La Grande, and all lanes of the roadway from Exit 304 north of Baker City to Exit 374, three miles west of Ontario.

U.S. 30 is closed to non-local traffic and does not serve as an effective detour route for I-84.

The closures are likely to continue for several hours, according to ODOT. A huge piece of the wind turbine tower looks to be resting on the pavement after crashing through a concrete barrier.
