San Luis Obispo County, California (Santa Margarita, CA) – On April 16, 2022, two people were killed and four others were injured in an accident on Highway 101.
The agency was still investigating the specific cause of the collision but found that alcohol had a role. The incident happened at 8 p.m. in Santa Margarita, on the northbound side of Highway 101, just south of Santa Barbara Road. Berenice Cortez Pineda, 47-year-old, was traveling with four other occupants when she went over onto the highway along the Santa Barbara Road off-ramp. Felipe Gonzalez, 21-year-old, was speeding beyond the 65 mph limit when he lost control of his suburb. He veered towards the shoulder and collided with Pineda’s vehicle.
Pineda’s automobile was thrown 120 feet and spun counter-clockwise as a result of the collision. Celene Reducindo, 47-year-old, and Maria Hernandez, 54-year-old, were occupants in Pineda’s vehicle when it collided. Pineda and two other occupants, Mia Peralta, 3-year-old, and Ricardo Gonzalez, 48-year-old, were seriously injured. Felipe Gonzalez, the other vehicle, was detained as a result of the accident. He was transferred to Templeton’s Twin Cities Community Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Three people were seated in Pineda’s sedan’s back seat, one of whom was not wearing a seatbelt.
According to authorities, Pineda was drawn over into the shoulder for an unexplainable reason. CHP dispatch logs primarily reported that her vehicle was on fire, and substantial smoke was spotted.
