San Diego County, California (San Diego, CA) – On April 12, 2022, a collision between a pick-up vehicle and a sedan injured two individuals and killed one on Interstate 5 in the South Bay.
Authorities said the collision involved a Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Jetta on the northbound side of the freeway close to Coronado Avenue in San Diego’s Nestor neighborhood at around 11 a.m. The operator of the Ford Ranger, a 65-year-old man from San Diego, was heading northbound on I-5 when his vehicle swerved across all lanes of traffic and was hit by the Volkswagen Jetta, operated by a 24-year-old Chula Vista woman.
The incident forced Ford to flip, which led to the 63-year-old female occupant from San Diego being thrown out. The 63-year-old lady was taken to a nearby hospital, where succumbed to death. In addition, the Ford driver suffered significant injuries, while the Volkswagen driver suffered moderate injuries. Authorities are looking into what caused the Ford driver to swerve across all lines of traffic.
The accident closed two northbound lanes of the freeway, causing considerable traffic in the region. As of 12:15 p.m., the highway was cleared at the accident location. Alcohol and/or drugs are not thought to have had a role in the incident. The victim’s identity has been withheld awaiting notification from the family.
