Washington County, Oregon (Banks, OR) – On November 19, 2021, at around 9:29 A.M., Oregon State Police responded to a complaint of an accident on Highway 6 near milepost 35, west of Banks, involving a trailer being hauled by a Ford F550 and a school bus.
According to initial investigations, Frank Rich, 64-year-old, of OTIS was driving a red 1999 Ford F550 truck carrying an unloaded flatbed trailer westbound on Hwy 6 near milepost 35 when the trailer began to fishtail violently and disconnected from the connection. The trailer crashed with the driver-side rear axle of the school bus after disconnecting from the vehicle. The Nestucca School District school bus was traveling eastward on Highway 6 on a field trip to Portland. Steven Parks, 51-year-old of Cloverdale drove the school bus.
The school bus started to twist and fell into the eastbound ditch, eventually coming to rest against the embankment wall, obstructing both lanes of Highway 6. On the bus, there were 6 adults, including the driver, and 31 pupils. Seven persons were carried to separate hospitals by medics with minor injuries and as a precaution.
The operator of the Ford F550 received a ticket for driving an unsafe vehicle. He lacked the proper connecting system for the trailer.
