San Mateo County, California (Redwood City, CA) – On January 18, 2026, a major collision involving an overturned tractor-trailer brought northbound traffic to a standstill on U.S. Highway 101 in Redwood City, CA.
The incident, which occurred just south of the city limits, resulted in minor injuries for the drivers involved and forced significant lane closures that persisted for nearly twelve hours. California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene near the Marsh Road exit at approximately 10:50 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered an 18-wheeler lying on its side along the right-hand shoulder. The commercial vehicle had collided with a sedan, though the specific circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.
According to CHP Officer Sophie Lu, both the driver of the big rig and the driver of the sedan sustained injuries described as minor. Officers told ABC7 that both individuals were transported to Stanford Hospital for treatment. Authorities noted that there was no immediate preliminary information regarding the cause of the collision.
The wreck created a logistical headache for Sunday commuters. Immediately following the crash, three northbound lanes were shut down to accommodate emergency response and clearing operations. While one lane was reopened within the hour, two lanes remained closed throughout the middle of the day, causing significant backups.
