Los Angeles County, California (Downey, CA) – On June 24, 2023, Officials verified that three Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton were among the four persons who died in a severe incident on the 5 Freeway in Downey, CA.
The single-car accident happened soon after 2:30 a.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Dodge Charger collided with a bridge abutment on the southbound side of the motorway, just west of the 605 motorway. Two of those who passed away were assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, according to the Marine Corps. A third Marine was appointed to the I Marine Expeditionary Force’s 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
The military did not immediately divulge their identities. Coroner’s authorities named three of the four victims as Daniel Nichols, 27-year-old, Joshua Moore Jr., and Rodrigo Zermeno Gomez, 21-year-old. The identity of the fourth individual has not been revealed. According to authorities, the automobile was traveling at high speed when its operator lost control, leading it to collide with a guardrail and bridge abutment of the Lemonran Avenue pedestrian overcrossing. When the automobile collided, it split in half and flipped. Two occupants in the back seat were thrown onto the right shoulder of the route, and the automobile’s rear part stopped about 100 feet south of the front end. The Highway Patrol claimed in a press release that the driver and front passenger were inside the automobile when it caught fire. Firefighters promptly arrived on site and extinguished the fire.
The car’s four passengers were all confirmed dead on the spot.
