Sacramento County, California (CA) – On August 17, 2023, a 53-year-old Galt man was killed in a collision on Highway 104 in Sacramento County, CA.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened at 5:20 a.m., near Clay Station Road, close to Highway 104. A 53-year-old was operating an eastbound Honda Civic and a 35-year-old from Ione was operating a westbound Dodge Ram. The Honda allegedly accelerated and drove the wrong way through a curve, according to witnesses in the vicinity, according to CHP. The Dodge Ram and the driver collided directly. The lone occupant of the Honda Civic was the deceased driver. The Dodge Ram’s driver complained of back pain but declined further medical attention.
The 53-year-old man was identified as Marcus Winkfield in the following statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Officer Marcus Winkfield, today, at approximately 5:15 a.m., Officer Winkfield was involved in a car accident while en route to work and passed away from his injuries on scene. Winkfield was an exemplary officer and an integral part of Mule Creek State Prison.
The two lanes of Highway 104 were shut and will reopen as soon as the coroner arrives.
