Tuolumne County, California (CA) – On July 23, 2025, four people died and one was injured in a vehicle collision at Shaws Flat Road and Highway 49 in Tuolumne County, CA.
A westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 56-year-old man stopped at an intersection, then, for unknown reasons, pulled into the path of a northbound pickup going 60 mph, driven by an 18-year-old Jamestown man. The crash’s impact sent the Jeep northwest, where it came to rest on the west side of the shoulder of Highway 49. The driver and three passengers died, according to CHP.
The four who died were identified as Jose Ortacotto, a 56-year-old, Jose Ortacarmona, an 83-year-old, Elba Melendezdeorta, a 72-year-old, and Michelle Cotto Rodriguez, a 52-year-old.
The pickup driver had moderate to major injuries. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected, CHP said.
