Inyo County, California (Lone Pine, CA) – On July 16, 2022, two individuals were killed on U.S. 395 in Inyo County when their 2020 Hyundai read-ended a tractor-trailer.
According to the CHP, the victims are a 23-year-old man from Las Mesa, Calif., who was operating, and a 22-year-old woman from Ashland, Ohio, who was traveling with him. Their identities were not revealed.
The incident occurred around 1:04 p.m. northbound U.S. 395 close to South Haiwee Canyon Road, around 31 miles south of Lone Pine, California. Authorities said the Hyundai Sonata was heading north on U.S. 395 at around 65 mph. when it stumbled upon a 2006 Freightliner heading north but traveling significantly slower. Hyundai was unable to slow down and collided with the back end of the Freightliner, killing both Hyundai passengers.
The truck operator, a 45-year-old from Lakewood, Ohio, was unharmed. The CHP is continuing its investigation.
