Santa Clara County, California (Sunnyvale, CA) – On Monday, May 22, 2023, three people died and at least five were injured in a series of crashes that happened in Sunnyvale, CA.
At first, it was a single-car incident involving a pickup truck. It lost control around half past midnight on Monday, a little south of Fair Oaks Avenue. This caused other vehicles to follow suit, a chain reaction to crashes. Officer Ross Lee of the San Jose CHP said there were at least six vehicles involved in the northbound side crash, and one vehicle on the southbound side. Drivers and passengers of said vehicles exited and stood by the roadway. Three of the deceased were men, and two of the other victims landed on the southbound side, going over the center divider because of subsequent crashes.
Officer Lee said that they stopped within the lanes and got out of their vehicles to check for damages and to assess the other drivers if they were okay. A car traveling southbound must have hit them. Most of the morning was spent with crews clearing the scene. All three deceased victims are considered pedestrians by the CHP since they exited their vehicles. Five others were taken to the hospital. Police are treating the northbound crashes and the southbound one as two separate incidents. They are still determining the sequence of events that led to the crashes and the deaths. However, they believe that alcohol was not a factor.
Both lanes of Highway 101 have now reopened after eight hours of being closed since the accidents.
