Fresno County, California (Fresno, CA) – On December 21, 2021, an alleged drunk driver caused a collision on Tuesday, then carjacked a family and fled.
According to authorities, the suspect ran a red light between Blackstone and McKinley, colliding with two automobiles and destroying the traffic light pole. His crime allegedly worsened from there. When his gold SUV came to a stop upright in traffic on Blackstone with its two back tires torn from the back axle, undercover detectives mentioned that the suspect didn’t want to cooperate.
The suspect’s new vehicle was a white SUV with a family of four on board, including 8-year-old twin daughters who were now sharing the rear seat with him, and a father who was willing to obey the man’s commands to keep them safe. Authorities and undercover HEAT team halted the white SUV and detained 25-year-old Arturo Sanchez. They had seen him driving very aggressively through adjacent areas before the incident, hitting speeds of around 80 miles per hour and blowing through stop signs. Sanchez was intoxicated and sustained injuries, so he was sent to hospital before being booked into jail.
One of the vehicles he hit was being operated by a social worker who was delivering Christmas gifts to low-income families. Officers intend to prosecute Sanchez with DUI, hit-and-run, and carjacking.
