Coos County, Oregon (OR) – On August 2, 2023, shortly after 7:30 p.m., Upon learning of a three-vehicle collision on Highway 101, the Oregon State Police responded near milepost 249 in Coos County.
According to a preliminary investigation, a southbound Subaru Outback driven by Port Orford resident Wayne Clinton Lannin 79-year-old and a northbound Peterbilt hauled a loaded chip trailer driven by Coos Bay resident Daniel Warren Niehoff 42-year-old sideswiped each other, causing the Subaru Outback to skid and lose control. The Subaru Outback started to drift sideways and entered the northbound lane. The Subaru Outback was then struck by Connie Gene Hill’s 52-year-old Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling north.
Melinda Lannin, 79-year-old of Port Orford, and the driver of the Subaru Outback, Wayne Lannin, were both pronounced dead at the site. The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee (Hill) was taken with critical wounds to a nearby hospital. Niehoff, the Peterbilt driver, sustained no injuries. The on-site investigation had a six-hour total impact on the route. Although lane usage is thought to have contributed to the collision, more investigation is still being done. Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Coquille Police Department, Coos County District Attorney’s Office, Coos County Medical Examiner, ODOT, Green Acres Fire, Bandon Fire, Amling-Schroeder Funeral Service.
