Union County, Oregon (OR) – On August 16, 2023, the Oregon State Police responded to a multi-vehicle collision at around 5:10 am., on Interstate 84 at milepost 275 in Union County, OR.
According to the preliminary inquiry, Ilker Ozgur, 30-year-old from Woodside, New York, was driving a westbound Volvo (CMV) with a trailer when he lost control, overturned onto the passenger side, and came to rest with the trailer obstructing the fast lane-top in the direction of the west. Robert Eugene Floyd 60-year-old of North Powder, was driving a westbound Volkswagen Beetle when it collided with the overturned trailer and threw Floyd out of the car. The wrecked trailer was also damaged by a westbound Freightliner (CMV) and trailer driven by Jeffrey Miles Floyd 61-year-old of Goose Creek, South Carolina, forcing it to enter the median. As it passed the scene of the collision, Jerry Kent Gray 61-year-old of North Power, was operating a third commercial vehicle, a Peterbilt and trailer, when it collided with some road debris and became unusable.
Ozgur, the driver of the Volvo, had his injuries evaluated on the spot but chose not to be sent to the hospital. Robert Floyd, the driver of the Volkswagen, was pronounced dead at the site. Jeffrey Floyd, the Freightliner’s driver, suffered injuries and was sent to a nearby hospital. Peterbilt’s (Gray) driver was unharmed. For almost 9 hours while the inquiry was taking place on the spot, the motorway was affected. Investigations are being conducted into the first Volvo collision. Investigations are also being conducted into subsequent collisions that included the Volvo trailer.
