Merced County, California (CA) – On Friday, October 13, 2023, at around 11:00 p.m., three members of the same family died in a head-on collision with an allegedly drunken driver on HWY-140 at Kniebes Road in Merced County, CA.
The two-vehicle collision claimed the lives of Nicholas Leyva, a 67-year-old, Maria Leyva, a 69-year-old, and their three-month-old great-granddaughter, Celeste Leyva. They were riding in a Ford Expedition headed west with four other family members. According to authorities, Robert Pimentel, a 40-year-old, was the other driver. He was traveling east on HWY-140 in a Ford Explorer SUV. According to police, the Ford Expedition veered into the shoulder of the road, but the driver overcorrected and veered into oncoming traffic and was struck head-on.
In the collision, the infant girl and her great-grandparents also died. The expedition’s four other occupants, including Pimentel, were all taken by ambulance to a neighboring hospital with minor to critical wounds. After the fatal collision, Robert Pimentel was detained by police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The incident is still under investigation.
