San Mateo County, California (San Mateo, CA) – On January 20, 2026, a deadly two-vehicle crash snarled traffic for roughly five hours in San Mateo, CA.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that the lanes were cleared just before 8:00 p.m., bringing an end to a major gridlock that forced authorities to turn stranded drivers around on the bridge. The incident occurred just before 3:00 p.m. involving a sedan and a “Rooter Hero” commercial plumbing van. According to investigators, the collision resulted in the death of the sedan’s driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
The crash investigation required a complete shutdown of the westbound span, creating significant delays for evening commuters. During the closure, CHP officers directed trapped motorists to turn their vehicles around and drive east in the westbound lanes to exit the bridge safely.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
