San Diego County, California (San Diego, CA) – On September 20, 2023, two people were killed in a wrong-way collision and a motorist has been detained in connection with the incident on state Route 76 at Pala Mission Road, near Pala Casino in San Diego, CA.
According to CHP officers, a maroon Nissan Xterra SUV was heading east on SR-76 when, for an unexplained reason, it crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a white Toyota RAV4 SUV. Toyota’s 65-year-old Vista resident driver and 59-year-old female passenger were both declared dead at the site. Jesus Munoz, the 43-year-old driver of the Nissan, was brought to the hospital with injuries that were deemed serious but not life-threatening.
According to ABC 10 News, security cameras at the Pala Reservation caught not only the collision but also the driver of the Nissan stepping out of his car and lying on the roof of his wrecked SUV. Officers from animal control took charge of a pit bull that was recovered from the damaged Nissan SUV. The dog was expected to be fine.
About 90 minutes after the incident, Munoz was taken into custody and charged with many offenses, including felony DUI and counts relating to homicide.
