San Diego County, California (Encinitas, CA) – On April 24, 2022, a thermal man was detained Sunday on charges of recklessly escaping a police officer following a multi-car collision after a high-speed pursuit with CHP.
According to authorities around 8:22 a.m., CHP officers from the Oceanside region were monitoring northbound Interstate 5 on Manchester Avenue when they noticed a grey Nissan Sentra being driven aggressively at high speeds. Authorities attempted a traffic stop, but Nissan refused to stop, and a chase ensued. The automobile proceeded to escape CHP officers on northbound I-5 until it left at Encinitas Boulevard and went eastbound for a little over a mile until it neared the Via Cantebria crossing.
As Nissan approached the junction, it ran a red light and executed an unlawful left turn onto Via Cantebria northbound. Two automobiles heading westbound on Encinitas reached the junction at the same time. The first car was a grey Volkswagen Jetta operated by a Carlsbad woman, 25-year-old. The second car was a grey Chevrolet Traverse operated by a 32-year-old Encinitas woman, who was accompanied by her two boys, a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old. The Nissan crashed into the Volkswagen and then into the Chevrolet as it made a left turn into the junction. The Nissan operator and its passengers, all Thermal residents aged 16 to 20, were rushed to surrounding hospitals with serious injuries. The drivers of the Volkswagen and the Chevrolet, as well as their minor passengers, were brought to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
The Nissan operator was apprehended by CHP officials on suspicion of recklessly dodging a police officer. Alcohol and drugs were thought to have been a factor in the crash. The CHP secured the junction about 1 p.m. Anyone who saw the incident was requested to call the CHP at 760-643-3400.
