Santa Barbara County, California (Lompoc, CA) – On May 23, 2022, a hit-and-run incident happened around 10 p.m. on Monday in Lompoc, California.
The victim, identified as Shirley Cavazos Juarez, 50-year-old, a local from Lompoc, died in front of her residence after being hit by a driver between West Laurel Avenue and North J Street. Authorities say the motorist reportedly lost control of her automobile and hit the victim as she had just arrived home from work. The motorist, identified as Miriam Aidee Vela Estrada, 26-year-old, of Lompoc, was allegedly speeding down the alleyway along 300 and 400 blocks of North J and North K streets. As she reached West Laurel Avenue, she lost control of her automobile.
The car hit a gas meter and a fence and hit the victim. Juarez sustained critical injuries and emergency workers brought her to Lompoc Valley Medical Center, where she later succumbed to death. The suspect escaped from the incident. Meanwhile, the police were able to find her, and upon conducting the investigation they found out that alcohol played a role in the incident. Authorities detained Miriam Aidee Vela Estrada for driving under the influence that caused great bodily injury, gross vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit-and-run.
Residents in the area are asked to review their video cameras and notify police at 805.736.2341 if they have evidence from Monday at 10 p.m.
