Deschutes County, Oregon (OR) – On Wednesday, November 10, 2021, a fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 97 in Deschutes County.
OSP rescued the incident on Highway 97 milepost 114 in Terrebonne. According to reports, a silver Hyundai Elantra, operated by Karl Thompson, 58-year-old of Metolius, was heading southbound on Highway 97 when it tried to pass a southbound black Dodge Ram on the side.
The Dodge Ram was operated by Kyle Jensen, a 32-year-old from Redmond. When the Elantra attempted to enter the southbound lane, it hit the front of the Dodge Ram, pushing the former into the northbound lane. The Elantra then hit a Nissan Pathfinder, operated by Jessica Shaw, 33-year-old. The Pathfinder was sent into the southbound lane when it was hit by a Dodge Tow Truck, operated by Austin Ontjes, a 26-year-old from Terrebonne. Pathfinder’s driver, Jessica Shaw, died on the spot. The occupant of Elantra, Emmanuel Pina-Lopez, 29-year-old of Madras, was taken to an area hospital with major injuries, while Austin Ontjes sustained minor wounds.
Karl Thompson and Kyle Jensen, together with the occupants of the Tow Truck, did not sustain injuries. The highway was blocked for 6 hours.
