Contra Costa County, California (Brentwood, CA) – On June 23, 2025, two people died in a multi-vehicle collision on the southbound 405 Freeway at Moraga Drive in Brentwood, CA.
During a Monday morning news conference outside the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that Sgt. Shiou Deng had died. McDonnell said Deng was on the freeway when he saw a crash ahead. He activated his amber lights to slow traffic but was struck by another vehicle as he approached.
At 1:58 a.m., CHP responded to a multi-vehicle crash involving an LAPD patrol car. One person died at the scene, while two others, including the officer, were hospitalized. The other person’s condition is unknown.
McDonnell said Deng served over 26 years with the LAPD, including 17 in the mental evaluation unit. He became a sergeant two years ago and was assigned to the West LA division.
