Union County, Oregon (La Grande, OR) – On September 18, 2023, Police have named the semi-truck driver who was killed in a collision after leaving Interstate 84 in La Grande, OR.
According to Oregon State Police, Victor Lee Jones, 62, of St. George, Utah, was driving an eastbound Volvo commercial vehicle when he veered off the road, crashed through a fence belonging to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and collided with a tree. The semi-truck was completely consumed by flames after being struck. At the scene, Jones’ death was confirmed. The event is still being looked into, and it is not yet unclear why the semi-truck left the road.
Oregon State Police are investigating accidents and fatalities by examining factors like fuel levels, refueling history, and driving duration. Tibbetts claimed the fire likely originated in the truck’s cab due to significant damage caused in the area. A camper trailer and an automobile parked close to the barn also suffered damage from the fire, while no other structures were in danger.
The La Grande Rural and Elgin Rural Fire Department responded with mutual aid. Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative and Avista Utilities responded to the scene, which Tibbetts said is standard for any structural fire. The La Grande Police Department and Union County Sheriff’s Office also provided assistance.
