Contra Costa County, California (Oakley, CA) – On February 26, 2026, a deadly crash left one person dead and four others injured following ended police pursuit in Oakley, CA.
Officials said. The victim was identified as 50-year-old Erwin De La Cruz. The collision happened at Laurel Road and O’Hara Avenue, where authorities shut down the intersection for several hours. According to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, five people were involved in the crash, with two trapped in their vehicles and later rescued. One person died at the scene, and four others were transported to hospitals. Surveillance video shows a gray Honda running a red light and colliding with a black Tesla, which caught fire. The stolen Honda also hit a Honda SUV.
Three teenagers inside the stolen Honda suffered major injuries, including one who was ejected. The Tesla driver was killed. Officials noted concerns about the Tesla’s battery fire and potential toxic smoke. The pursuit began with the Antioch Police Department and briefly involved the Oakley Police Department.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol are investigating.
