Umatilla County, Oregon (Pendleton, OR) – On February 21, 2022, interstate 84 in eastern Oregon was stopped due to a series of collisions involving roughly 100 automobiles around Deadman Pass. There were reports of injuries, although it was unknown how many or how severe they were.
Shutdowns are in effect from Pendleton to Ontario. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, eastbound lanes will be restricted for many hours and westbound lanes will be blocked overnight. Authorities responding to the initial incident reported hearing several automobiles colliding when they arrived at the scene just after noon.
According to the authorities, the greatest pileup featured roughly 20 cars, and there were approximately 98 automobiles and trucks that collided in the region altogether. Paramedics from local emergency response organizations were transferring wounded drivers to surrounding hospitals. Other stranded motorists were being transported to the Pendleton Convention Center at 1601 Westgate Avenue.
The region is under a winter storm warning, with 2 to 4 inches of snow expected Monday afternoon above 3,500 feet of elevation. Temperatures were in the 20s and were forecast to drop to single figures overnight, with a wind chill approaching zero.
