Orange County, California (Newport Beach, CA) – On May 12, 2022, authorities in Newport Beach are investigating a single-vehicle collision on the Coast Highway. Three people were killed, and three laborers were hospitalized.
The collision occurred about 12:45 a.m. in the 3000 block of West Coast Highway. Police responded to several 911 reports of a single car collision. The car, identified as a black 2022 Tesla Model S, was apparently heading eastward when it crashed with construction materials on the south side of the road. When officers arrived on site, they found three dead victims inside the car. The victims have been named as Wayne Walter Swanson Jr, 40-year-old, of Newport Beach, Crystal McCallum, 34-year-old, of Texas, and Andrew James Chaves, 32-year-old, of Arizona. Three construction workers who were on the job at the time of the crash were taken to a local hospital and treated for minor, non-life threatening injuries.
The collision is being investigated by the department’s Major Accident Investigation Team. The highway’s eastbound and westbound lanes between Riverside and Superior Avenues were blocked for several hours to allow for an investigation before reopening.
