Roseburg, Oregon (Integrate 5 near MP 126 Southbound) – On November 3rd around 10:50 pm a tow truck operator with Walt’s Tow Company was working a recovery on I5 southbound when they were struck and killed by a commercial vehicle.
According to Oregon State Police, a commercial motor vehicle traveling south failed to move over for the tow truck and struck and killed the operator. The tow operator, Henry Lichtwald (63) of Roseburg, died on the scene as a result of the crash. The commercial motor vehicle operated by Jagraj Singh Sidhu of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, immediately pulled over and cooperated with the investigation.
Commentary on Oregon Emergency Vehicle Crashes
Tow truck drivers are often put in harm’s way when working recovery on the side of the road. The Move Over Law (ORS 811.147) states that if you are approaching any type of emergency vehicle, tow truck, or roadside assistance vehicle which is stopped on the roadside with emergency lights activated, you must; move over into another lane if available or slow down. This law is in place to prevent accidents and deaths like this one. Sadly over 40 tow truck drivers are killed each year.
