Columbia County, Oregon (OR) – On May 17, 2025, Oregon State Police responded to a crash involving two vehicles on HWY 30, near milepost 22, in Columbia County, OR.
A westbound Dodge Nitro, driven by Gary E. Fowler, a 70-year-old of Deer Island, reportedly struck the rear of a westbound Lexus R330 at high speed, causing it to leave the road and roll onto nearby railroad tracks. The Lexus driver, Angela M. Kornhauser, a 43-year-old of St. Helens, was seriously injured and hospitalized. Her passenger, Christopher M. Casillas, a 37-year-old of Everett, WA, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.
Fowler, the driver of the Dodge, sustained minor injuries and was medically cleared at a local facility. He was later booked into the Columbia County Jail on charges of DUII, first-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.
The highway was affected during the on-scene investigation. Speed and driver impairment are believed to be the main factors in the crash.
