Deschutes County, Oregon (OR) – On December 16, 2023, OSP responded to a car incident on HWY 97 near milepost 128 south of Redmond in Deschutes, OR.
According to preliminary investigations, at around 7:14 p.m., a white Ford Econoline van was traveling on HWY 97 when it drove into HWY’s shoulder for an unclear cause. The driver of the vehicle lost control and drove across both northbound lanes, the central median, and into the southbound “A” lane. The vehicle collided with a silver 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee heading south. Ghandi Lakshmi Satya Sai Yerramsetti, a 23-year-old from Redmond, and Christy Lee Bigelow, a 29-year-old from Bend, both passengers in the Jeep, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the site. Nicholas Loren Husted, a 32-year-old from Bend, the Jeep’s driver, was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
HWY 97 was closed, and traffic was diverted during the inquiry. On 61st Street, a suspected drunk motorist collided with an Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) vehicle that was diverting traffic. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office arrested the defendant, Nicholas Jason Cardone, 33-year-old from Bend, for DUII. The driver of the ODOT vehicle was sent to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
An additional non-injury crash happened near the incident site, and Lylliane Walczyk, 20-year-old, was detained for DUII. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation all aided the Oregon State Police.
