Multnomah County, Oregon (Portland, OR) – On August 27, 2023, the Oregon Department of Transportation closed milepost 103 on Interstate 84 westbound for recovery of two semi-trucks involved in an accident that fell into the Columbia River in Portland, OR.
Oregon State Police are looking into two unrelated crashes that happened in the same location hours apart, according to the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office. There were no reported injuries. The Old Highway 30/OR 206, which is a parallel road to I-84, can be used by westbound traffic as a detour, and it connects back to I-84 at Celilo. It is also possible for traffic to utilize U.S. 97 to cross the Columbia River at Biggs Junction, proceed west on state Route 14, and then return to I-84 by way of the U.S. 197 bridge at The Dalles.
The complexity of the recovery will determine how long the closure will last. The ODOT stated that until the recovery process begins, “we won’t know if any of the semis are stuck on rocks or other debris in the river. We know this is an important route and will work as efficiently as possible to re-open the interstate.”
