Two Separate Wrong-Way Crashes, Injured 4 Individuals – California
March 10, 2022

Santa Barbara County, California (Santa Ynez Valley, CA) – On March 8, 2022, just before 8 p.m., a wrong-way motorist triggered two separate vehicle accidents that wounded four people.

According to fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli, three people were badly hurt, with one being flown to a neighboring hospital via helicopter and the others being transferred by land ambulance. A fourth individual suffered minor injuries. The wrong-way motorist was on Highway 101 south of Los Alamos, going south in the northbound lanes. Before triggering a multi-vehicle collision at Alisos Canyon and Highway 101, the wrong-way motorist triggered many near-misses. Two automobiles collided as they sought to avoid being hit by the wrong-way motorist.

The force of the accident caused one of the automobile’s gas tanks to break, spewing approximately 50 gallons of diesel gasoline over the dirt shoulder. After the collision, the wrong-way vehicle drove south in the northbound lane. As a result, he collided with a Toyota driving north on Highway 101 at the Highway 154 interchange. As a result, he collided with a Toyota driving north on Highway 101 at the Highway 154 interchange. The collision also prompted diesel fuel to pour into the road, with roughly 30 gallons spilling onto the median.

Both passengers in the wrong-way automobile were able to exit the vehicle on their own and were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The operator of the Toyota was rescued by firefighters and taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with serious injuries. Alcohol and/or drug consumption had a role in the collisions, and the operator of the wrong-way car was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
