San Diego County, California (San Diego, CA) – On February 5, 2022, a motorist died when his vehicle collided with a boat that slipped off a trailer while being pulled on a state highway east of San Diego.
Jennifer Kathleen Nichols, 49-year-old, Bonita, was confirmed as the driver. She was the wife of Kirk Nichols, the acting San Diego Harbor Police Chief, who was a passenger in the automobile and sustained minor injuries. The incident was reported at 6:20 p.m., on California 94 in Jamul.
Robert Keith Thomas, 28-year-old, was operating a 2000 Mazda B3000 truck towing a boat on a trailer when the boat came loose as he went onto the highway from a side road.
The boat slid onto the road, immediately in front of Jennifer Nichols’ 2016 Fiat 500, which was going east. The front of the boat collided with Fiat’s left front corner. Thomas, of Tuolumne County, California, was detained on accusations of vehicular manslaughter and gross negligence. Alcohol and drugs were not considered to be factors in the collision.
Nichols sustained several injuries and was airlifted to a trauma facility, where she succumbed to death.
