Contra Costa County, California (Contra, CA) – On December 1 3, 2022, an individual was killed and injured three others in a wrong-way incident on the eastbound lanes of Highway 4 near Railroad Avenue in Pittsburg, CA.
CHP obtained a report on Tuesday morning that the driver was heading in the opposite lane, the eastbound lane. Dodge Durango smashed into a Honda Accord. A Toyota and a tanker truck subsequently collided with the Honda. The operator of Honda died on the spot while a passenger sustained fatal injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The Toyota driver and an infant passenger were also rushed to hospital, while the tanker truck driver was unharmed.
CHP said the Dodge driver escaped but was later held in custody by Pittsburg authorities. Identities of the arrested Dodge and Honda drivers pending release. Investigators say the impairment was considered an element in the collision.
Eastbound Highway 4 was closed for hours resulting in traffic jams and was later reopened after 2 p.m. Eastbound traffic was supported up to Concord at the moment.
