San Diego County, California (San Diego, CA) – On December 20, 2021, in a wrong-way incident on Interstate 8 in the Ocean Beach area late Monday evening, one motorist died and another was apprehended.
Around 11:25 p.m., the CHP began getting calls. reporting a blue Subaru Outback heading eastbound on I-8 near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. As per the agency’s incident report, the wrong-way Subaru slammed head-on with a gold Toyota Camry, causing “debris all over the road — individuals in both vehicles not responding.”
Multiple witnesses and responding San Diego Police Authorities hurried to assist the drivers before help arrived. The Subaru operator was stuck in the crash, and rescue workers had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate him. Subaru’s driver, a 24-year-old Sacramento man, was sent to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment. The Subaru operator was detained on suspicion of DUI and will be booked after medical treatment.
The driver of the Toyota, a 54-year-old San Diego woman, was also stuck in her vehicle after the collision. CHP officers verified that she was declared deceased at the site. There were no additional injuries were recorded.
