Los Angeles County, California (Whittier, CA) – On November 16, 2022, a wrong-way driver hit a batch of recruits for law enforcement in the South Whittier area near Mills Avenue and Trumball Street.
The incident involved 25 recruits who sustained head trauma to life-threatening injuries, including one who was admitted to a ventilator. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva says a batch of 75 recruits was on a training exercise running when the vehicle hit the group.
Five individuals are in fatal condition, four have less serious injuries while 16 others have had minor traumas. The driver, who sustained minor injuries, cooperated with the authorities. Surveillance showed that the vehicle drove in the left lane without slowing, thereby hitting the group.
CHP handled the traffic portion of the investigation, authorities said.
