Deschutes County, Oregon – One person is dead and two injured after a head-on collision at milepost 35 on HWY 20 in Deschutes County, Oregon.
At around 6:45AM on October 2nd, 2019 a gray 2016 Toyota Tundra driven by Esmeralda Martinez (35) of Albany, was traveling eastbound on HWY 20 when for unknown reasons lost control and collided with a westbound semi-truck.
Esmeralda Martinez was pronounced deceased at the scene and a male passenger, identified as Carlos Callejas-Martinez (34) of Albany, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The westbound semi-truck of International Knight Transportation CMV was driven by Jay Azzano (29) of Las Vegas, NV. Azzano was transported to a Bend area hospital via air ambulance with serious injuries.
Photos were provided by Oregon State Police in a press release that came out in the afternoon of October 2nd.
As we see several times a week in just California and Oregon head-on crashes are deadly especially when faced against a big rig. What is surprising in this accident is the damage to the semi-truck and the severity of the injuries to the driver. Oregon State Police have not released a cause of the crash but this year on Oregon’s roads there has been an increase of distracted driving-related accidents.
